In 2015, it’s estimated that over 200,000 adults in the U.S will be diagnosed with lung cancer. It is the 2nd most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among men & women. While these statistics are alarming, they shouldn’t be taken as a death sentence.

Though there is no proven way to completely prevent lung cancer, there are ways to lower your risk factors. Everyone has different risk factors, so refer to your doctor for information regarding your personal risks. Chances of this disease go up when one is exposed to asbestos, radon, tobacco & smoking, and/or has a genetic predisposition for lung cancer.

Symptoms and signs to watch for include fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, loss of appetite and coughing up blood, mucus and/or phlegm. These signs don’t always lead to lung cancer, but it is recommended that you speak with your doctor to get a proper screening and diagnosis.

Chalmers Cancer Treatment Center, an entity of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, has a team of cancer-care professionals providing expert knowledge for lung cancer treatment across Reno County and surrounding areas. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, contact Chalmers for information on the disease and treatment options.
