February is Heart Month, a time when our focus turns to love, candy, and heart disease. We understand not everyone is thinking of heart disease, but we are at the Heart & Vascular Center. Despite advancements being made each year, heart disease is still the leading cause of death.
Did you know:
- 610,000 Americans will die of heart disease this year, that’s 1 in 4 deaths
- Every 25 seconds an American will have a coronary event
- Every 39 seconds someone dies from heart disease or stroke
- Heart disease kills more women than all the cancers combined
- An estimated 735,000 Americans will have a heart attack this year
- 210,000 of these patients will have had a previous heart attack
Here at the Heart & Vascular Center at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, every month is Heart Month. Our staff witnesses the devastating effects of heart disease, however, we spend every day helping patients detect, manage, and treat heart disease. We offer stress tests and cardiac CT to aid in identifying heart disease. The AACVPR accredited Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation unit helps heart attack survivors thrive and reduce the risk of recurrent visits to the hospital. Our EECP (enhanced external counterpulsation) therapy program is dedicated to help patients with persistent stable angina that have exhausted the standard treatments for revascularization. For patients needing revascularization, the cardiovascular cath lab and surgery unit have state-of-art equipment and highly trained staff to ensure the best possible outcome for our patients. From minimally invasive drug-eluting stents and rotational athrectomy to surgical interventions such as coronary bypass and valve replacements, our care encompasses all of your cardiac needs. We also utilize the Impella device, a small heart pump that helps support the patient during high risk coronary stenting, when the heart is too weak to do the work itself. The Heart & Vascular Center continually strives for excellence in cardiac care for our own and surrounding communities.
To help celebrate Heart Month, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is having an Open House for their Cardiopulmonary Rehab Unit on February 16th, 3pm-5pm. Following the open house, our Cardiovascular Cath Lab Medical Director, Michael Hagley MD, will present an original lecture, “Heart Attacks: Then & Now”, at our First Course. Doors open at 4:30pm and the lecture starts at 5:30pm; a free boxed dinner is served. We are also selling our phase III cardiac rehab cards at a discounted price. It would be a pleasure for the community to partake in our efforts to increase awareness and knowledge of heart disease, not just in Heart Month, but every month.
