Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) President and CEO Ken Johnson, visited the Kansas Statehouse on February 6 for meetings with Governor Laura Kelly, Speaker of the House Ron Ryckman, and Lieutenant Governor Lynn Rogers along with area lawmakers. Johnson was accompanied on the meetings by Mike Garrett, President of Horizons Mental Health Center and Richard Shank, External Affairs Representative for Hutch Regional.
Legislators visited by the Hutch Regional delegation were Senators Ed Berger of Hutchinson and Rick Wilborn of McPherson along with Representatives Joe Seiwert, Jason Probst, Paul Waggoner, Les Mason, and Jack Thimesch. At each meeting, Johnson urged lawmakers to allow a full debate and vote on Medicaid expansion in both houses of the legislature.
Also, the Hutch Regional group met with Kansas Hospital Association (KHA) governmental affairs representatives to coordinate plans for supporting passage of legislation favorable to healthcare. Johnson said he is was very pleased that the Governor and legislators carved time out of their busy schedules to meet with the Hutch Regional representatives and requested an ongoing dialogue going forward in an effort to address issues under consideration during the 2019 legislative session.
First adjournment for this year’s legislative session is slated to begin on or about April 1 with the veto or wrap up session scheduled for late April.
Johnson invited Governor Kelly and Lieutenant Governor Rogers to visit Hutch Regional and both accepted.
