The Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Acute Inpatient Rehab unit has been granted a three year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. (CARF), a 51-year old organization headquartered in Tucson.
CARF is a specialized accreditation agency for rehab units within healthcare facilities and other human service agencies worldwide. Achieving CARF accreditation demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence.
The initial three-year accreditation was achieved in 2014. This certification was renewed in May 2017 for another three-year extension.
While there are approximately 17 inpatient rehab units in Kansas. Only two, including the HRMC Rehab unit, have earned CARF accreditation, the other being located in metropolitan Kansas City.
Sarah Spexarth, Program Director for the HRMC inpatient rehab unit, said the surveyors made an on site visit to HRMC and reviewed three years of patient records, interviewed a number of current and past patients, and contacted outside agencies including insurance carriers and other hospitals that refer patients to HRMC.
“They were very complimentary of the services we provide and made no recommendations for improvement in the health and safety standards of the survey,” Spexarth said. “They literally checked to determine how we performed in more than 1,500 CARF standards.”
Program strengths noted by the surveyors included leadership, program expansion, (therapy dog program and lunch bunch program), community education and involvement, an active medical director, comprehensive resource manual for patients and family, patient safety, technology, bedside team conference, Joint Commission and Stroke Certification and infection control.
Dr. Robbie O’Brien-Leighton, Medical Director of the Acute Inpatient Rehab Unit, said “The Administration at HRMC has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and dedication to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit by pursuing CARF accreditation. This was one of my deciding factors to practice at HRMC.”
Ken Johnson, President and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, said the Acute Inpatient Rehab Unit at HRMC strives to be one of the state’s premier treatment facilities.
“We applaud the unit for their efforts to provide excellent patient centered care for patients,” Johnson said.
