In national rankings recently released, Consumer Reports ranked Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC) number 11 in patient safety out of 127 hospitals in Kansas.
The ratings are based on a safety score compiled by Consumer Reports covering a number of areas, including discharge instructions, and avoiding C.difficile and MRSA infections. Other categories are taken into consideration, with much of the information coming from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data base.
Among area facilities, only Newton Medical Center came in higher, at 5. Other area hospitals ranked included:
- 14 - Wesley Medical Center of Wichita
- 19 - McPherson Hospital
- 20 - Hays Medical Center
- 21 - Susan B. Allen in El Dorado
- 29 - Salina Regional Health Center
- 31 & 33 - Via Christi hospitals in Wichita
Consumer Reports statistically adjust their data to account for differences in hospitals due to the types of patients they serve. Scores related to the chance of readmission and patient experience in surgery were adjusted based on the health status of the patients.
The scores are based on a 100 point scale, with each of the 5 domains weighted equally. HRMC had a score of 60. The highest score in Kansas was a 76.
HRMC showed improvement in the following categories:
- Avoiding C.Difficile infections
- Avoiding Readmissions
- Doctor-patient communication
- Nurse-patient communication
