Children’s Bereavement

Caring for Kids Facing Loss

Our Children’s Bereavement program is designed specifically for school aged children (kindergarten through 17) and focuses on helping children understand their feelings, process their grief, recognize that they are not alone, and learn coping skills as they integrate loss of a loved one into their life.

The Golden Sweater

Many loved ones were lost this past year and more people are searching for ways to deal with their grief. Hospice & HomeCare of Reno County invites you to watch this video featuring an animated book, The Golden Sweater. This thought provoking book shares a child’s journey coping with grief through strength and love. Hospice Social Worker, also shares some tips on helping children and their families grieve. Kids Kamp

“Space to Grieve” is a one day camp for kids coping with loss. This free camp is provided in partnership with the Cosmosphere and other community partners.  Our camp provides an opportunity for children to process their grief alongside peers who share similar experiences. Learn more.

Community Support

We are available to work with schools and/or church groups in our service area, providing children’s grief support.  Parents/guardians and community members who identify youth grief counseling needs may contact our Bereavement Team, 800.267.6891, for additional support and resources.

Kid’s Kit

Our unique and award-winning Kid’s Kit was carefully created to help young children understand and accept terminal illness and death. Each kit includes two children’s books, crayons, and teddy bear. The books teach children about grief and encourage them to share their grief with others.

Developed by our agency in the early 1990s, the Kid’s Kit received the National Hospice Organization (NHO) Award of Excellence in 1993. Learn more.
